Your safety is the number one priority. If you are unsure if the offenders are still in your home, do not enter your house. Stay outside, or go to one of your neighbours that you trust. Once you are in a safe location, proceed with the following steps:
Call the police to report the burglary
- If there’s a chance the offender is still in your home, call 000.
- If the offender has left, then call 131 444.
It’s important you do not touch anything until after the police attend, as they will take evidence to try to find the offender.

Create an inventory of what has been taken or damaged
- The police, and your insurance company will require a list of everything that has been taken or damaged in the burglary. Take photos of impacted rooms or property.
- Don’t forget to check if any credit cards or keys have been taken in the break-in.
Contact your bank to report stolen cards
- If any banking details or cards have been taken, either immediately block those accounts or cards via your bank’s app, or ring your bank to have a stop put on these.

Notify your insurance company
Once the police have attended the scene, you should receive a police report number. Contact your insurance company and lodge a claim.

Secure your property
Unfortunately, once you have been the victim of a break-in, there is a heightened chance of another break-in occurring. It’s critical to take action to secure your home and stop another burglary. Any windows or doors that were broken during the break-in should be repaired immediately, and then you should make plans for additional security measures. You might think about:
- putting in an alarm system,
- changing your locks,
- adding extra lighting—like sensor lights,
- putting up security cameras,
- keeping your valuables in a safe,
- pruning or removing any plants blocking the view of doors and windows, and
- installing security screens and doors.

Installing security screens and doors
Many Prowler Proof dealers will prioritise homeowners who have experienced a break-in and require sec doors, as they understand the trauma you have experienced, and they also want to reduce the risk of it happening again.
