Preparing for storms and cyclones with security screens

In Queensland, we’re all too familiar with extreme summer weather. Preparing for storms and cyclones is second nature—but did you know that security screens can help protect your home not only from intruders but also from the destructive forces of extreme weather? The recent impact of Cyclone Alfred across Southeast Queensland is a reminder of the importance of cyclone protection. That’s where cyclone-resistant security screens, like Prowler Proof’s ForceField® security screens, come in. Engineered for strength and durability, ForceField® has been tested to withstand both Australian and US cyclone conditions.

Australian Standards Cyclone Test (AS/NZS 1170)

The Test:

This cyclone screen test involves two components:

✔ Missile Test – A 4 kg timber block is smashed into the security screen at high speeds.

✔ Ballistics Test – Five steel balls (8 mm in diameter) are fired at the mesh.

The Result:

✅ Passed. ForceField® withstood a 65 km/h corner impact and centre impacts up to 104 km/h, with forces reaching 1,659 joules—16 times more than required by Australian Standards. The mesh remained intact even when steel balls were fired at 178 km/h.

US Hurricane & Pressure Cycle Test (AAMA 506-06/ASTM E1996/ASTM E1886)

The Test:

✔ A 4.1 kg piece of timber is launched at the screen at 54 km/h.

✔ The screen undergoes 9,000 air pressure cycles simulating different wind directions and speeds.

The Result:

✅ Passed. The screen showed no failure or duress after testing. Your Benefit: This test further proves that ForceField® security screens are cyclone-resistant security screens that can withstand extreme wind pressure and debris impact.

How Security Screens Protect Your Home in Storms & Cyclones

  • Impact Resistance – High-quality stainless steel security screens can withstand flying debris, branches, or hail that strong winds may hurl at windows and doors. They act like a shield, preventing glass breakage and reducing the risk of dangerous shards flying inside.
  • Wind & Pressure Protection – When a window or door breaks during a cyclone, sudden pressure changes can cause roofs or walls to lift off. Security screens add an extra barrier, keeping glass intact longer and helping maintain structural integrity.
  • Corrosion Resistance in Coastal Areas -Marine-grade stainless steel (like 316 stainless steel) is designed to resist corrosion, making it ideal for cyclone-prone coastal regions.
  • Prevention of Water Intrusion – Security mesh helps deflect wind-driven rain, reducing the chance of water entering through broken glass or damaged frames.
  • Bushfire & Heat Resistance (bonus for storm–fire prone areas) – Some security meshes are fire-rated, meaning they can also protect against ember attacks during bushfires, which sometimes follow summer storms.
  • Everyday Benefits – Even outside storm season, they provide ventilation, insect protection, and year-round home security.

In short: Security screens act as a first line of defense, reducing storm damage, protecting your family from flying debris, and keeping your home sealed against dangerous wind pressure changes.

How can security screens help protect my home during storms and cyclones?

Security screens provide a strong barrier against flying debris, reduce the risk of windows breaking, and help maintain structural integrity by preventing sudden pressure changes. Marine-grade stainless steel screens also resist corrosion in coastal areas, offering added protection year-round.
