Best Residential Installation 2024

National Security Screen Association’s Best Residential Installation 2024 by Chalmers Security Installations (CSI)

This winner of Best Residential Installation 2024 project began with a question from the homeowner: “Is it possible?” Their home in Sherwood, is a beautiful mix of old-world charm at the front, and newly updated modern design aesthetic at the back. This presented both a unique opportunity and significant challenges. Central to the home’s design were expansive cavity stacking doors leading to a patio area and pool—a focal point that allowed the family that perfect balance of indoor/outdoor living that Queenslanders demand. They required a perfect balance of aesthetics, security, and functionality.

When the plans first arrived, they outlined a vision for 3000mm-high doors. However, in collaboration with the window manufacturer, it was quickly revealed that this configuration wouldn’t work due to structural limitations, but it was just the beginning of the challenges.

The large doors didn’t come with provisions for security screens, which meant a custom tracking system was needed. Working closely with G.James, Stephen and the team from CSI developed a quality solution that was both functional, aesthetically pleasing, and the primary feature for this job winning Best Residential Installation 2024. The installation required timing and coordination with the builder to ensure the tracking and doors were installed before the cavity was built. Multiple site visits, phone calls, and over a year of collaboration with builders, suppliers, and trades were needed to bring this vision to life.

Throughout the home, security was a top priority for the young family, but so were natural light, airflow, and design consistency. The mix of heritage-style wooden casement windows upstairs and modern aluminium designs downstairs called for innovative solutions. Prowler Proof ForceField® screens were the perfect choice. The Hinge window security screen product complemented the aluminium casement windows, while single hinge doors were used over heritage style French doors which maximised the airflow through the home.

The cavity stacking doors were the biggest design challenge. Measuring over 2700mm in height and 1650mm in width, they required concealed interlocks to maintain a clean look. This ensured there were no visible screws, aligning perfectly with the modern aesthetic of the home. The old and new elements were united by the thoughtful use of Prowler Proof’s award-winning products, blending heritage charm with contemporary innovation.

The homeowner’s security concerns extended across both levels of the home. Compliant screens were installed on all openings, with emergency exit points included on the second floor for fire safety. The ASSAABLOY Lockwood triple locks were all keyed alike for convenience. Every opening was secured, and the family can now leave their windows and doors open to enjoy the breezes without compromising their safety.

This project was over 12 months in the making, and the results achieved were undeniably worth all of the effort. The beautiful home now boasts a blend of security, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. From custom tracking systems to the toughened welded corners and H.I.T. concealed interlocks, every detail was carefully considered to create a beautiful and secure family home.

Chalmers Security Installations take pride in turning “Is it possible?” into “Yes, it is” which is evident with this project, have a look through the gallery to see what was achieved and why it was awarded Best Residential Installation 2024 at the NSSA Design Awards.
