Improving home security is a recognised, funded part of helping people stay safely in their own home rather than being forced to leave it. A few examples:

Keeping Women Safe in their Homes (Australian Government)

This federal initiative, backed by $76.57 million in funding since 2015–16, helps women and children stay in their home or a home of their choosing when it’s safe to do so.

Home security upgrades under the program can include alarms, security screens and locks, and monitored personal safety devices, alongside risk assessments and safety planning. Department of Social Services.

National Safer in the Home (The Salvation Army)

This national program funds basic security upgrades for victim survivors of family violence in the low-to-medium risk range, specifically so they can stay safely connected to their home, community, work and children’s schooling.

A security screen door is explicitly listed among the upgrades it funds, alongside lock changes and security lighting. The Salvation Army

Safe at Home (Victims of Crime South Australia / Women’s Safety Services)

This program provides free home safety audits and tailored security packages — including security screens, locks and sensor lighting — for women and children at risk of homelessness due to family and domestic abuse. Victims of Crime SA

Your Toolkit

A safety checklist for women staying in the family home after separating from an abusive partner recommends installing security screens to as many external doors and windows as possible, alongside deadlocks, dowelling window and door tracks, and outdoor sensor lighting. Your Toolkit

Similar state-run programs exist elsewhere — including Staying Home Leaving Violence in NSW and the Keeping Women Safe in their Home initiative in Queensland — and typically include a home security component. If you think you might be eligible for a funded upgrade, that’s worth pursuing through a local family violence service before paying privately; details are on the pages linked above.

How a Prowler Proof security screen or door fits in

A Prowler Proof security screen or door can usually be fitted to an existing door or window opening — it doesn’t require replacing the whole door — and is built with welded corners rather than crimped or riveted joints, so it can’t simply be popped off its hinges or pried apart at the frame. Every screen is tested to AS 5039, the Australian Standard for security screens, and made in our own factory in Banyo, Queensland, with a 10-year replacement warranty.

Two things matter here beyond the standard sales pitch. First, from the outside a Prowler Proof screen looks like any other quality security door — it doesn’t read as a safety upgrade, which some people specifically want. Second, because we manufacture locally rather than import, our lead times are typically faster than the eight-plus weeks quoted by some — useful if you’re arranging security privately, urgently, or outside a program’s eligibility criteria. Our certified dealer network covers South Australia and the eastern seaboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are security screens and doors covered by a government program, or do I have to pay for them myself?

It depends on your circumstances and where you live. Programs like Keeping Women Safe in their Homes, Safer in the Home, and state-based equivalents can fund security upgrades including screens for eligible applicants, usually via referral through a family violence support service rather than a direct public application. If you’re not eligible, or need something faster, you can arrange a Prowler Proof screen privately through a local certified dealer.

How quickly can a security screen or door actually be installed?

Because Prowler Proof manufactures locally in Banyo, Queensland rather than importing, our lead times are generally faster than the wait times reported by some funded upgrade programs. Your local dealer can confirm an exact timeframe once your opening is measured.

Will a security screen stop someone who already has a key or existing access to the property?

Not on its own. A security screen and door is effective against forced entry — someone trying to kick in, pry open, or break through a door or window — but it isn’t a substitute for changing locks, a personalised safety plan, or legal protections like an intervention order. Combining a security screen with a locksmith rekey and advice from a family violence service gives a more complete picture than any single measure alone.

I’m not sure security screens are the right thing for my situation — who can I talk to?

1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) is a free, confidential, 24/7 national counselling and referral service and a good first call regardless of your situation. In an emergency, call 000.
