What Australian family violence services say about home security

Improving home security is a recognised, funded part of helping people stay safely in their own home rather than being forced to leave it. A few examples:

Keeping Women Safe in their Homes (Australian Government) —

This federal initiative, backed by $76.57 million in funding since 2015–16, helps women and children stay in their home or a home of their choosing when it’s safe to do so.

Home security upgrades under the program can include alarms, security screens and locks, and monitored personal safety devices, alongside risk assessments and safety planning. Department of Social Services.

National Safer in the Home (The Salvation Army) —

This national program funds basic security upgrades for victim survivors of family violence in the low-to-medium risk range, specifically so they can stay safely connected to their home, community, work and children’s schooling.
