Burglar Resistant Doors & Windows: Which Security Mesh Actually Stops a Break-In?

Most break-ins aren’t sophisticated. They exploit an unlocked door, a flimsy screen or an easy window. The right burglar resistant doors and windows remove that opportunity before it’s taken.

Best Security Mesh for Burglary Prevention

Not every “security” screen is actually burglar-rated. A standard flyscreen or a lightweight decorative grille will slow almost nobody down. To be genuinely burglar resistant, a mesh needs to be tested to the Australian Standard AS5039, which covers knife shear, impact, pull, anti-jemmy and probe testing.

Three mesh types cover most of the market. Perforated aluminium is a single punched sheet, tough, corrosion-resistant and a strong deterrent, used in our Protec range and a good option for coastal homes. Woven aluminium mesh is lighter duty and generally cheaper, but offers less resistance to sustained cutting or prying. Stainless steel mesh, particularly 316 marine grade as used in our ForceField® range, is the strongest option against both cutting and corrosion.

The mesh is only half the equation. A strong mesh in a screwed-together frame is still vulnerable at the corners, so frame construction matters just as much as the material.

Burglar Resistant Doors

For doors, the things that matter are welded frame corners, mesh material, and the number of locking points. Screwed or riveted corners are the most common weak point on lower-quality security doors, pry there and the whole frame can separate.

Every Prowler Proof door is built with fully welded corners and sliding doors can be fitted with H.I.T. (Hidden Installation Technology) interlocks and receivers, concealed fixing extrusions hide and lock away fasteners, so there’s nothing exposed for an intruder to remove or tamper with. Hinge doors suit single doors and French door openings; sliding doors suit sliding and stacking openings. Both are available across ForceField®, Protec, and Diamond, so you can match burglar resistant construction to your home’s style and budget.

Burglar Resistant Windows

Windows are the single most common entry point for burglars. A window screen needs the same welded-frame, tested-mesh construction as a door, whether it’s fixed or designed to open.

Fixed window screens suit windows that don’t need access to window operating hardware, and are fitted directly into the opening. Hinge window screens use European hardware with multi-point locking and a dual-action handle that prevents accidental opening, for windows you use regularly. For multi-storey homes, our Guardian® range adds fall-prevention while still allowing full window operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is any door truly burglar proof?

No. Any door or screen can be defeated with enough time, tools and determination, so “burglar proof” is an unrealistic claim from any manufacturer. What you can achieve is burglar resistant, a door tested to withstand knife shear, prying and impact for long enough that most burglars give up and move on, since most break-ins happen in under five minutes.

What should I do to make my home safe after a burglary?

Don’t enter if you think someone’s still inside, call 000. Once police confirm it’s safe, photograph the damage for your insurance claim and police report before you clean up. Board up any broken doors or windows until they’re properly repaired, and change your locks straight away if keys were taken. Burglaries are often repeated, so it’s worth reinforcing entry points with tested security doors and screens once the immediate damage is dealt with, rather than only replacing what was broken.

Where can I buy burglar resistant doors in Australia?

Through a certified Prowler Proof dealer. Search by suburb or postcode to find your nearest dealer for an obligation-free measure and quote.

What mesh is used in burglar resistant security screens?

The strongest options are perforated aluminium and 316 stainless steel, both tested to AS5039. Lightweight woven aluminium mesh offers some deterrence but less resistance to sustained forced entry.

Do burglar resistant doors need to meet an Australian Standard?

AS5039 is the recognised benchmark for security screen doors and window grilles in Australia. A door tested to this standard has been through knife shear, impact, pull, anti-jemmy and probe tests, ask for the test certificate, not just a compliance claim.

Are Prowler Proof doors custom made or supplied as standard units?

Every door and screen is custom manufactured to your opening, not sold as an off-the-shelf unit, so the fit and finish match your home exactly.
